Egg Farmers of Canada releases inaugural Sustainability Report

OTTAWA, November 18, 2020 – Egg Farmers of Canada is pleased to announce the release of its first Sustainability Report, outlining how egg farmers across Canada are investing in and implementing sustainable agricultural practices. The 2019 Sustainability Report also covers initiatives and programs that set out new opportunities for the future of egg farming.

“This inaugural report shows how egg farmers have positioned themselves as leaders by living sustainably every day, through every choice they make,” said Roger Pelissero, third generation egg farmer and Chair of Egg Farmers of Canada. “It sets out a blueprint for how we can build on our current practices as we grow our industry, putting egg farming at the forefront of sustainable agriculture.”

The report further defines Egg Farmers of Canada’s commitment to sustainability and presents concrete ways in which egg farmers are moving toward becoming more sustainable, while also highlighting the industry’s recent advances. The approach is built around five pillars, which represents a range of commitments to strengthen the industry: protecting the health and welfare of our hens; delivering safe, high-quality eggs to Canadians; finding new ways to make egg production more environmentally sound; enhancing the well-being of others; and empowering our people.

“With the wide-spread and growing uses of eggs comes the responsibility to produce eggs sustainably,” said Tim Lambert, Chief Executive Officer of Egg Farmers of Canada. “We’re very proud of this report, and are confident it will help egg farmers communicate their past successes and challenges so our industry continues to contribute to domestic and global efforts to produce more food with fewer resources.”

Building on an extensive materiality assessment, the report details a sustainability framework that corresponds to the areas of greatest significance to Canadian egg farmers and Egg Farmers of Canada’s network of stakeholders. It also describes how the efforts of Canadian egg farmers support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The combination of these initiatives and a holistic vision will continue to shape the Canadian egg farming industry in the years to come.
