New Federal-Provincial-Territorial Agreement for the Canadian egg farming sector marks historic milestone
OTTAWA, November 26, 2024 – Egg Farmers of Canada (EFC) is pleased to announce a new Federal-Provincial-Territorial Agreement (FPTA) on Guiding Principles for the Marketing of Eggs in Canada. The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, added his signature to the Agreement which marked the final step in an extensive and thorough process that involved the participation and engagement of provincial and territorial egg boards, supervisory boards and governments, Farm Products Council of Canada (FPCC), and the EFC Board of Directors. The newly adopted Agreement will now officially enter into force and serve as the cornerstone of all policies and procedures for the Canadian egg farming sector.
This monumental accomplishment represents a historic outcome for Canadian egg farmers. The FPTA, which sets out the responsibilities of EFC and the provincial and territorial egg boards, strengthens the underlying framework for egg marketing in Canada and is a concrete example of the modernization of supply management. Earlier this year, the FPTA was reviewed and endorsed by all 10 provincial governments and the Northwest Territories. This pan-Canadian recognition was an essential step in ensuring legislative support from across Canada for the renewed Agreement.
Finalizing the Agreement would not have been possible without the commitment of the members of the FPTA committee who dedicated countless hours to oversee the development and championed a robust, principal-based approach. EFC would also like to recognize the many contributions of provincial and territorial egg boards and supervisory boards throughout the process. Their focus on a national solution that respects regional differences was vital in establishing the Agreement. Additionally, the unwavering support from FPCC was central in delivering an outcome that accounts for the interests of all jurisdictions within the Canadian egg farming sector.
The FPTA represents a collective effort to focus on a strong, unified egg farming sector and is a point of celebration for all. EFC, along with the more than 1,200 egg farmers and farm families located across Canada, offers a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part in the consensus-based process. These contributions will have a lasting impact on our sector for generations to come and will help ensure a bright future.
