Dishing out delicious at the Downtown Diner

How do you celebrate Canadian agriculture and make farmers the superstar of the show?

For Egg Farmers of Canada, the answer was simple: join together with Dairy Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada, Canadian Hatching Egg Producers and Chicken Farmers of Canada to create a truly unique event in downtown Ottawa.

We hosted a tasty breakfast and lunch pop-up event called the Downtown Diner this past June 1st and invited Members of Parliament, Senators, Parliament Hill staffers and the curious public to take part.

We handed out more than 2,500 sandwiches between 7:30 AM and 2:00 PM. Guests enjoyed a menu highlighting local Canadian food like Mini Breakfast Quiches, Canadian Breakfast Scrambles and Truly Canadian Frittatas, to name a few.

The concept behind the Downtown Diner was to bridge the gap between the farm and our tables. Our goal was to highlight the contribution of Canadian farmers to our national economy, and to present an opportunity for guests to meet some of the more than 16,168 hard-working poultry, egg and dairy farmers who produce the wholesome food we all enjoy and depend on every day.

As Canada prepares to celebrate 150 years as a country, we wanted to proudly spread the message that agriculture is an extremely important part of our country. Our farmers produce high-quality and wholesome food for Canadians, and contribute $29.6 billion to Canada’s GDP—that’s something to celebrate!

Our Downtown Diner was a great reason to serve up some inspiring facts about the farming sector, along with some fantastic delicious treats—sounds like the perfect combination to us!
